5 Tips to Help you Pick the Perfect Outfits for your Personal Brand Photo Shoot

So you finally pulled the trigger and booked that brand photo shoot — first of all, YOU GO GURL. Cheers to you for investing in your business, and putting yourself out there!

Now, the real dilemma…… WTF are you going to wear?! We get asked this ALLLLLL the time, so we decided to put together a little sumthin’ sumthin’ to help you pick out the perfect wardrobe for your shoot!

Here are our top 5 tips to help you pick the perfect photo shoot wardrobe…..

1) WEAR SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD.

Seems pretty obvious, but you’d be amazed how many people pick out things they don’t feel awesome in, but they like the style or think it’s what they should wear. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you don’t FEEL amazing in what you’re wearing, there’s a solid chance you aren’t going to look amazing (that is, unless you’re a professional model and that’s what you do for a living, in which case, you do you….. but if you’re like the rest of us non-supermodel folks, lean towards something that makes you feel like a million bucks!). Feel good = Look good.

2) BE ON BRAND.

What’s your brand all about?! Is it about being an everyday, down-to-earth woman? Then you probably don’t want to wear an uptight, rigid power-suit, or a super formal dress, you’ll probably want to wear something like jeans and a comfy sweater! Or is your brand all about being a badass? Then maybe ditch the dainty dress, and whip out the leather jacket! Really think about what your brand represents, and embody it in your wardrobe! Another great way to do that is to consider your brand colors! You don’t need to dress head-to-toe in your signature shade of green, or anything like that, but think of ways to subtly incorporate a little pop of your brand colors, or wear colors that compliment your signature colors (so that the photos will blend in seamlessly on your social media/website!).

3) BE STRATEGIC WITH YOUR OPTIONS/ACCESSORIES

Ok, now this is where it gets a little more complicated. In order to make the most of your photo session, you essentially want to create as many diverse images as possible, so that it doesn’t look like you are just posting the same photo over and over. The easiest way to achieve this, is with your wardrobe. Hear me out — of course there’s the obvious, you could change an entire outfit, and that’ll give you a whole new photo (and I definitely think you should plan to do that at least once during your session!), but another great (and quicker) option is to wear something versatile, and change out accessories. So, this could mean starting in jeans and a tank top, then throwing a cardigan over it for a few shots, then taking the cardigan off and putting on a coat, then taking off the coat and adding some jewelry for a few close up shots, then adding glasses, etc. By using interchangeable accessories, you can stretch one look into multiple looks, in a matter of minutes! We highly recommend organizing this ahead of time, whether it be with photos on your phone of the outfit combos, or by hanging them all up in a way that makes sense, so that when you arrive to your shoot, you’re ready to maximize your time!

4) AVOID SHORT-LIVED TRENDS

We guide our clients to anticipate using their photos for roughly 3 months - 1 year (at most) of promotion, so if you don’t think a trend is going to be relevant near that 1 year mark, avoid it! This also goes for seasonal photos — if you know you’re only going to be able to get photos done once this year, avoid anything TOO seasonal, as it might be interpreted as irrelevant a few months down the road!

5) STAY AWAY FROM DISTRACTING COLORS AND PATTERNS

Unless your brand is all about being bold and extra (in which case, we dig that!), try to keep your color palette and patterns not TOO distracting. Ultimately, we want the attention to be on YOU, not on your fluorescent pink shirt or leopard print pants! Stick to stuff that doesn’t steal the spotlight, but compliments your awesomeness!

With these 5 tips, you should be well on your way to planning the perfect photo shoot wardrobe!
